Health Tips | Immune Booster

With the cold and flu season upon us, it is essential that we do our best to keep our bodies healthy and strong.

Children, elderly persons, pregnant women and those with serious underlying medical concerns need to be most vigilant about building up immunity, especially as the winter season approaches and flu season gathers momentum.

Is it possible to help strengthen my immune system naturally?

Yes it is!

Top general immune boosters:

Beauty rest! Head to bed early and aim for 7-8 hours sleep every night.

Fresh air! Bundle up and head outdoors. Outside time can naturally improve vitamin D levels which may enhance your ability to fight off infection.

A nutrient rich diet. Eating a wide variety of foods rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants can fortify your body's defences.

Managing allergies. Pinpointing and avoiding and eliminating potential allergens frees your immune system up to be strong.

Reducing stress. Practicing stress reduction and doing things you enjoy in life are an essential factor for a healthy immune system.

Is there anything natural that I can take?

Vitamin, mineral and antioxidant formulas as well as herbal and homeopathic medicines can do their part to keep you healthy through the flu season.

vitamin C, zinc, vitamin E, selenium are some of the nutrients used as medicines to strengthen immune function.

herbal medicines such as astragalus, echinacea, holy basil, and andrographis are a few examples of what your herbal immune boosting formula may contain.

acupuncture, hydrotherapy, dietary cleanses, and exercise prescription may be a few of the other ways your naturopathic visit can help you fight off infections.

Because each person is unique, it is very important to consult with a Naturopathic Physician for a recommendation on which formulation and treatment type is most appropriate for you!

Immune support tea:

This tea contains herbs that are rich in vitamin C and that are soothing and calming to the digestive tract, both of which are very important for a healthy immune system!

  • 2-3 cups of filtered water
  • 1 teaspoon of rose hips, 1/2 teaspoon of peppermint leaves.
  • Bring water to a boil, then gently immerse the wonderful aromatic herbs in the water. Let steep for 5-7 minutes, strain, then sip for a soothing immune tonic.

What is a Meyer's IV?

There are many other types of immune support that your naturopath may suggest to you, one of which is the IV immune support treatment. Using IV principles, a high dose of immune boosting nutrients are delivered to your body and are extremely "bioavailable" or useful for your body as the nutrients do not have to pass through the digestive tract. Getting these nutrients in therapeutic doses has been shown to enhance your body's inate immune response.

So, this fall flu season, as you can see, there are many things that you can do to help keep your body feeling healthy. It is best to speak with your Naturopathic physician to determine what will be the most effective treatments for your health.

Reminder that most extended health plans cover Naturopathic visits, make sure to check your coverage before the end of the year to ensure you take full advantage of your extended health benefits!
