Dr. Carley Akehurst, ND
To my valued patients,
As some of you know, I am expecting my second child at the end of February and I will be starting my maternity leave on February 8th, 2017. Thank you for your support during this past year. I would like to assure you that you are in excellent hands with the talented Dr Kristen Brown and Dr Kaleigh Coolsaet that are stepping in to cover my practice. As always, the rest of the Cross Roads team is also available to you. Please contact the clinic to book with them in my absence. I look forward to seeing you again when I return to my practice next winter.
Dr. Carley Akehurst
It was while sailing around the world in 2003 that Dr. Carley Akehurst was first introduced to complementary and alternative medicine. A student of international study abroad program Semester at Sea, Dr. Akehurst developed a passion for the ancient healing modalities that would eventually become part of her medical practice. After returning home to UBC, Dr. Akehurst continued her pursuit of natural medicine and became the first UBC student to graduate with a minor in Health and Society. Following graduation from UBC, Dr. Akehurst worked in the medical field with both NDs and MDs. This experience, combined with her broad background in sciences and arts, has proven to be invaluable in her naturopathic clinical practice. After gathering clinical knowledge in both the conventional and naturopathic fields, Dr. Akehurst followed her heart to the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine.
Dr. Akehurst believes that doctors play an important role as teachers, educating and empowering patients to achieve balance in their own lives. During an appointment with Dr. Akehurst, she will listen to your unique story and conduct a thorough health history, a focused physical exam and laboratory testing (if necessary). She will then recommend an individual treatment plan that may include a combination of herbs, acupuncture, diet and lifestyle counselling, nutritional supplementation, allergy desensitization, detoxification, hydrotherapy and homeopathy. In her practice, Dr. Akehurst emphasizes integrating foundational scientific knowledge and modern research with the traditional philosophies and practices of naturopathic medicine.
During her training at Boucher, Dr. Akehurst worked in various clinical settings including the Family Naturopathic Clinic in Victoria and the Positive Living Society of BC in downtown Vancouver. Dr. Akehurst is highly trained in the treatment and prevention of chronic disease, immune dysfunction, allergies, gastrointestinal disorders, hormone imbalance and stress and fatigue. She has a strong passion for family medicine, especially fertility, obstetrics, women's health and pediatrics. She is currently undergoing newly licensed naturopathic certificates in obstetrics, pediatrics and gynecology with renowned ND and midwife, Dr. Mary Bove. Dr. Akehurst supports normal birth and has additional training and experience as a birth doula, childbirth educator and breastfeeding consultant.
Outside of clinic practice, Dr. Akehurst can be found skiing or hiking the local mountains, reading a good book or cooking for family and friends. She enjoys spending quality time with her remarkable husband Aaron and spirited dog Angus. Born and raised in Vancouver, Dr. Akehurst is thrilled to be joining the fabulous team at Cross Roads Naturopathic.
